ヤラ・ヴァレーで生まれ、育ったワインメーカー、マック・フォーブス Mac Forbes Wines。ヤラ・ヴァレーのウーリ・ヤロック、ウェスバーン、ホドルス・クリークといった独自のテロワールを持つ地区が、世界で徐々に知られるようになったのは、マックの功績です。

ヤラ・ヴァレーで育ったものの、マックが最初にヴィンテージを経験したのは南フランスでした。多くのオーストラリアの若者たちと同様、故郷を離れ冒険を求めて海外へと翼を広げようと1993年ヨーロッパへ旅立ちます。旅の資金が底をついたマックは南フランスのワイナリーで働きます。それがマックにとっての初めてのワイナリーでの仕事でしたが、ワイナリーでの仕事は体力的に非常にきつく、その時はマックは特にワイン造りに没頭するということはなかったそうです。

オーストラリアに帰国した後、マックは大学へと進学し、両親の勧めで醸造学の学位を取得しました。そこからがマックのワインでのキャリアでのスタートでした。その学位をもってマックは自分の興味を引く仕事にはどんどん取組み、イギリスでのワイン造り、オーストリアでのコンサルタント業、そしてヤラ・ヴァレーの著名なワイナリー、マウント・メアリーでも働きました。知識のピースを一つ一つ集め、マックは自身のワインへの哲学を作り上げていきます。

2004年、オーストラリア・ワインは、ワイン評論家の影響によりリッチでフル・ボディのオーストラリア・ワインがアメリカなどの市場で高い評価を受けていました。ですがヨーロッパを旅行している間は、マックは地元の人々にオーストラリア・ワインは特徴がなくつまらない、テロワールがない、と言われたのです。
その当時、オーストラリアの生産者でテロワールについて詳しく語る生産者はほとんどおらず、テロワールの概念を深く掘り下げて探究する生産者はさらに数が少なかったと思われます。ヤラ・ヴァレーに戻った当時のマックも、ヤラ・ヴァレーで自分が作りたい、フレッシュで個性のあるワインができるかは懐疑的でした。
そしてマックはヤラ・ヴァレーの気候が変化していることに気づきます。かつて冷涼でピノ・ノワールやシャルドネに理想的だった地域がだんだんと温暖になり、結果最終的にできるワインは以前に比べるとエレガントで複雑味に欠けてきていたのです。このことをマイナスにとらえるのではなく、マックはさらに冷涼な地域を探求し始めます。

困難に立ち向かいながらも、マックはヤラ・ヴァレーを毎年革新的な方法で探究し続けています。マック・フォーブスEB(Experimental Batches 実験的なバッチの意味)ラベルというラベルで異なる品種、地区、醸造テクニックなどを試みたワインをリリースし、ヤラ・ヴァレーへの理解を深めています。
自分の名を冠したワイン・ブランドを始めてからの過去12年間、マックはオーストラリアのテロワールを語る声を、小さなささやきから世界へ響くコーラスへと高めていきました。自分の故郷であるヤラ・ヴァレーから、自身の素晴らしいワインをもって、ヤラ・ヴァレーの地区、ブドウ畑への探求、論議を推進していきました。
マックはブドウの畝と畝、畑と畑といった、ヤラ・ヴァレー、そしてオーストラリアのテロワールを語らせてくれるニュアンスへこだわりを持っています。
土地の個性をワインに反映させる、「正直な」ワインを追求します。
 

 

It's Riesling Fever.....

As the first of our 2017 wines start to walk out the door we are excited to be sharing what will become recognised as one of our "great' vintages. Freshness, fruit weight and high expression all contribute to the balance and moreish quality of these wines.

When we started to assemble these wines from their dormant winter months in large wood, we were already seduced by the pleasure and purity shared by these wines. After the shock of bottling, we have seen the wines take a little longer than normal to bounce back, possibly due to the rarely seen low alcohols (range of 8.5%-10.5%). 

My recommendation  - jump straight in a try a couple now but also stick a bunch in the cellar. These wines will give you 30 plus years in the cellar conservatively.

Generally 5 degrees cooler than the valley floor, this small vineyard is surrounded not by other vineyards but rather unforgiving grazing land. With the often challenging conditions of 2016 (heat and drought) we were once again curious to observe the resilience of these wonderful vines planted in 1983. Unirrigated, they are unrushed and once again delivered fruit of pure dimensions, stunning granite soil influence on the back palate holding line and offering great presence. 2017 started slowly in September 2016 and took a more leisurely stroll through to harvest in March. Punctuated with regular rainfall and a moderate warmth, 2017 was a gorgeous season.  In Strathbogie Ranges, the increased elevation of 600m ensured disease pressure was low on the back of many cool nights and mornings.  Low sugars and higher acids dancing with glorious fruit weight define 2017. WINEMAKING All our Rieslings in 2017 were crushed to the press and so remained until we felt the juice had built up enough tannin. Then this juice was pressed slowly to large old oak and sometimes tank where the wine remained without any additions other than SO2 until bottling in August. Time on gross lees with the phenolic back drop combined with the electric fruit profile has resulted in a series of wines that are only just beginning a long life of communicating Strathbogie in 2017. MAC FORBES CHARDONNAY マック・フォーブス シャルドネ 原産地: ヤラヴァレー 希望小売価格 ¥4300  在庫あり 750ml, 2016, 12.5% The Yarra Valley label is the entry into Mac Forbes' Chardonnay wines. The Yarra Valley Chardonnay is a blend of fruit from Healesville, Hoddles Creek and Woori Yallock vineyards. Appearance: Pale straw, brilliant Nose: Cashews, grapefruit pith and finger limes with hints of orange blossom, green apple and the usual sulphide line. Palate: Firm appealing structure with support through a delicate acid and phenolic lattice. The Yarra Valley label is the entry into Mac Forbes' Chardonnay wines. The Yarra Valley Chardonnay is a blend of fruit from Healesville, Hoddles Creek and Woori Yallock vineyards. Appearance: Pale straw, brilliant Nose: Cashews, grapefruit pith and finger limes with hints of orange blossom, green apple and the usual sulphide line. Palate: Firm appealing structure with support through a delicate acid and phenolic lattice. The palate is long and cleansing with length and purity. The Yarra Valley Chardonnay is a blend of fruit from Healesville, Hoddles Creek and Woori Yallock vineyards.

見た目:淡く明るい麦わら色 香り:カシューナッツ、グレープフルーツの芯、かすかにオレンジ花のニュアンスのあるフィンガーライム、青リンゴ、若干の硫黄。 味わい:繊細な酸味とフェノールに支えられ、骨格のある口当たり。純粋で清涼感があり、余韻が長い。ヒールズヴィル、ホディーズクリーク、ウーリーやロックヴィンヤードの、ブレンドされた果物を感じる。

For us winemaking is an extension of the vineyard where we aim to capture the fruit expression and carry this through to bottle. We pick when the fruit is ripe but still crunchy to taste.
